001 Grant Writing Skills

This course enables the student to learn basic grant writing skills and grant researching skills for emergency services organizations. Topics to be covered include developing statements of need, establishing clear goals and objectives, gathering data to support the application, justifying the need(s), and establishing confidence in the organization.  Various grants that are available to fire departments and emergency response organizations will be discussed and a "Grant Resource Toolkit" will be given to each student attending.  The course is designed for students with little or no previous experience.

002 Improving Fire Ground Communications

Progress reporting on the fire ground during all phases of operations relays vital information between Incident Commanders and companies operating at the incident. This class is designed to improve your ability to effectively communicate during incidents using standard terminology and specific concise messages. Multiple scenario driven exercises and short acronym based memory triggers will help you develop your skills.

050 Response to Gunfire for Fire and EMS Responders

Instructor: Mike Oakley
Sadly, firefighters and other emergency responders are now more frequently fired upon in the course of their duties. They are also being called upon to respond to scenes with on-going ballistic threats such as active shooter events. This program addresses the types of gunfire events that first responders may find themselves at, what their actions should be to protect themselves, and what to do while waiting for SWAT to arrive on-scene. Also covered is integrating with an armed law enforcement escort team so as to attend to downed victims. This course will begin with a short classroom session and then proceed with many intense practical scenarios.

100 Advanced Truck Company Operations

Instructor: Matt Reed
This course will allow the student to practice and further refine his/her ability to effectively and safely perform the basic and advanced fire ground duties normally assigned to truck companies. This course will be physically demanding on the student. Students should be advised of the intense physical requirements that they will be asked to demonstrate during this course. Every effort will be made to ensure participant/student safety but this class has inherent dangers including, but not limited to: Working at heights above the ground, Potential exposure to "live fire", Working in smoke and/or with little to no visibility for prolonged periods, Excessive physical exertion, Power tool operation, and Self rescue scenarios.

Prerequisites: Firefighter 1 and Truck Company Operations (or equivalent)
Equipment Required: Full PPE, SCBA and Spare Bottle

101 Explosives Identification and Recognition - Bomb Tech Assistant

Instructor: Keith Vititoe
This course is designed to give the first responder - law enforcement, fire, EMS - core knowledge in the identification and recognition of hazardous devices including bombs, IEDs, and "booby traps".  The course will cover recent trends including the use of booby traps at clandestine drug labs and the risk of suicide bombings.  Students will then take that knowledge and learn how to apply with practical skills in support of law enforcement bomb squad operations.  This course will offer students the opportunity to see the practical application of key tools and equipment used in bomb squad operations and how they can provide critical support at incidents involving hazardous devices.

Students will receive two certifications for attending this course: “Explosives Identification and Recognition” and “Bomb Tech Assistant”

102 Fire and Life Safety Educator, Level 1 + Train-the-Trainer

Instructor: J.D. Jenkins
This course provides instruction in scheduling and delivery of existing fire and life safety education programs and information. Included are suggestions for: documentation of programs, utilizing time management, identify partners to address fire and life safety issues, select instructional materials based on intended audience, preparing public notifications, and evaluating programs . This course meets NFPA 1035 Standard 2010 Edition.

103 Fire Investigation - Level 3

Instructor: Mark Lambert, J.T. Hodges, and Steve Connolly
This program will begin with a review of Fire Investigation 1 & 2 , overview of the criminal justice system, the arson prosecution process, the prosecutor’s office and function as part of the arson prevention and prosecution team, an understanding of the importance of properly developing an arson case for prosecution, an overview of evidence collection and preservation procedures, an understanding of the elements of the crime of arson, an understanding of possible defenses to a charge of arson, and participation in an arson trial.

104 Fire Officer 1 / 2

Designed to meet the job performance requirements of NFPA 1021, 2009 Edition. It identifies the requirements necessary to perform the duties of a first-line to mid-level supervisor. Introduces the student to the concepts of management and super-vision on such topics as: Organizational Structure, Communication Skills, Human Resource Management, Public Relations, Planning, Emergency Service Delivery, Safety, information management, government structure, and department budget planning and management. Students will be eligible for Pro Board certifications upon successful completion.

This is a traditional learning class. The class will meet for the second weekend on November 7-9, 2014 at the Sissonville Volunteer Fire Department. Students will test on the second Sunday.

All students will be eligible for Pro Board certifications upon successful completion.

105 Hazardous Materials - Incident Commander

Instructor: Tom Miller
This course meets or exceeds the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 472 Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents, 2013 Edition, Chapter 8, “Competencies for Incident Commanders,” and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.120 (q)(6)(iv) requirements for Incident Command-level personnel. This course is designed and intended for personnel who respond to, or potentially could respond to, emergencies involving Hazardous Materials (HazMat)/Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) as an Incident Commander and who will be responsible for all incident activities, including the development of strategies and tactics and the ordering and release of resources. Participants who successfully complete the course and pass the required written and skills tests receive a National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) certification.

All students will be eligible for Pro Board certifications upon successful completion.

106 NIMS ICS-300: Intermediate ICS for Expanding Incidents

Instructor: Deron Wilkes
The basic concepts presented in IS-200 are expanded and discussed in detail. The single command organization is stressed and students will be exposed to resource management and the role and function of each ICS position, including air operations. Through a series of small group exercises students will be provided examples of how the essential system principles and components are used in incident planning.

Focusing upon the unique role of the Public Information Officer (PIO) in emergency management, this course will help PIOs or people assigned that role to fine-tune their job skills. Students will explore the role of the PIO in all phases of emergency management. They will look at the multi-faceted duties and challenges of it. Through individual and group activities, students will develop and practice a series of communication skills and identify ways to integrate all phases of emergency management into a comprehensive public information program.
